Tourist
arise from Auckland New Zealand. Playing distinctively original songs,
the band has defined a brave new sound unique for this part of the
world. Their rare ability to intertwine infectious melodic subtleties
and stadium-ready anthems demonstrate a group well beyond their years.
The quartet featuring Peter J Rudd (vocals, guitar) Rob Ranger (bass,
vocals) Scott Gamble (guitar) and Simon de Vere (drums), have their
debut album entitled 'Minutes Last For Years.' This
record will become the hypnotic soundtrack people can't shake from
their minds.
The album was recorded at Stir Studios, in the cold wet streets of
Cardiff, Wales and at York Street Studios, amongst the warm wet streets
of Auckland, New Zealand. 'Minutes Last For Years' was produced by
award winning UK producer Greg Haver who has worked
with international artists such as Manic Street Preachers,
Catatonia, Super Furry Animals, Mel C and New Zealand acts
The Feelers and Pluto. The resulting
sound of this recording is one that is intense and exciting, yet at
the same time openly accessible and honest. Peter J Rudd's unmistakable
voice, infectious melodies and thoughtful lyrics atop surging guitars
and raunchy, pulsating rhythm section that together forge a masterfully
structured debut album of colossal rock songs brimming with classic
britpop style and distinct indie flare. Rip It Up
magazine recently reviewing the band's last EP release noted 'Tourist
are a fresh New Zealand band that I have confidence in getting very
big because they are so original.'
'Minutes Last For Years' was recorded on Stir studio's
classic Trident TSM40 mixing desk that has history coursing through
its wood and wires. Together with its sister desk at Rockfield
studios in Wales the Trident has been used to record some
amazing records from elite rock and pop artists in the UK including
Oasis, Black Sabbath, Catatonia, The Charlatans, The Cult,
The Damned, Happy Mondays, Manic Street Preachers, Portishead, Queen,
Rush, Super Furry Animals, Stereophonics and The
Stone Roses. Parts of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody"
were recorded through the Trident desk.
Tourist was established in bass player Rob Ranger's flat in late 2000
with co-founder
and vocalist/songwriter Peter J Rudd after they had returned from
explorations overseas. Tourist solidified their current four piece
line up and in June 2002 independently released their limited edition
CD EP 'Beginning of the World.' Featuring five tracks
the debut EP received recognition both locally and overseas with radio
stations both in New Zealand and the UK playing various songs. One
of the songs from this EP titled 'Picture Perfect'
was licensed for the last three years for the soundtrack to an extensive
Television New Zealand and radio advertisement campaign.
In October 2004 Tourist released their 2nd independent EP titled after
the lead single 'Do You Feel The Cold?' Real Groove Magazine
reviewing the new release described 'Do You Feel The Cold?' as a strong,
self-released cluster of tracks displaying the musical abilities of
the band and their natural ear for melody and composition. The first
single was recorded with assistance from NZ On Air and produced by
Greg Haver. The song was featured on NZ On Air Kiwi Hit Disc 66, a
rare feat for an unsigned New Zealand artist and received significant
airplay on both commercial and student radio networks around the country,
including being play-listed on Kiwi FM (formerly Channel Z) since
May 2004 and hitting #1 on Auckland student radio station
95bFM for 4 weeks in October the same year. The single also
featured on commercial radio station The Rock's 'Off The Record'show
plus a music video screened extensively on nationwide music TV programmes.
The band also performed the song live on Top of The Pops
in November 2004.
Tourist was recently included on an emerging artist compilation CD
for the inaugural MUSEXPO conference held in Los
Angeles in May 2005. Subsequently, the nominated track "Do
You Feel The Cold?" received airplay on a number of
radio stations across North America including KDLD Los Angeles, KEDJ
Phoenix, KNRK Portland, WEQX Manchester, VT/Albany, NY and KROG Medford/Ashland.
The
2nd single from the EP called 'This Town' has also
received considerable airplay, particularly on 95bFM and other bNet
radio stations with a video released to the wider radio/television
networks late 2004. The 3rd single off the sophomore EP titled 'Island
Song' was written for a good friend of the band who was tragically
killed in a road accident while overseas and offers the suggestion
that while Kiwis may venture off overseas to travel the world, the
country they were born in will always be the home in their hearts.
The video was made by another good friend of the band and the friend
who
was tragically killed. Shot on classic Super 8 film footage (transferred
to DV Cam by Peter Jackson's Film Unit in Wellington) the music video
conjures up images of New Zealand's beautiful, yet confrontational
landscape.
Tourist are regular performers around New Zealand and have played
internationally alongside artists such as Gramsci, 48 May, Zillionaire,
Goodnight Nurse, The Heavy Jones Trio, Midwset Motorparts Corral,
The Septembers, Leonard and The Fanatics to name a few.
The band has a number of plans this year including the release of
their debut full length studio album 'Minutes Last For Years' and
touring New Zealand and overseas.

"I've lived with the beautiful
new disc you sent for several weeks now (at home, in the car
and at the office), and I must say you REALLY have an incredible
piece of work there! Very, strong song writing, remarkable performance,
truly inventive production and a very healthy attitude! Simply
put; One of the best discs in the genre I've heard in a long,
long time!"
Peter Holmstead,
ENTERTAINMENT NETWORK (Sweden), Oct 2006
"Tourist formed in late 2000 and while not yet a household
name, seem poised on the brink of Indie-rock greatness. The
impressive debut album a fresh collection of British tinged
rock songs."
Natasha Francois, NEW
ZEALAND MUSICIAN, Oct 2006
"With their impressive debut album Minutes Last For Years,
recorded in Cardiff by a producer who has worked with some of
the biggest names in the British rock scene; their publishing
held by an American company; and interest from Europe—they
seem to be doing something very right. One listen to their powerful
album—launched at the Kings Arms this October—and
it is easy to hear how they could be accepted by both Indie-rock
and mainstream audiences."
Graham Reid, VIEW AUCKLAND,

"It's slick, the songs powerful (especially the swooning
'Do You Feel The Cold?' and the lovely 'Minutes Last For Years')....Tourist
have Coldplay moments (on the thrumming 'Refugees' and 'Stranger'),
but they're at their best when they dip their toes into a swirling
whirlpool of hazy rock, like early 90's British indie bands
Swervedriver and Ride. Tourist show we are not to shabby at
solid and more conventional rock tunes either."
Scott Kara, NEW ZEALAND
HERALD, Jan 07
"The best way to describe their sound is to take one dose
of U2 (the early era), mix it with Manic Street Preachers and
add a touch of that typical 'down under' sound of Aussie rock.
There's a certain feeling going through the whole album with
a mood that the band has managed to capture within the recordings
of these 11 songs, the music feels close with a nerve that you
can almost touch and that's a good sign because music is an
art which is all about moving people. I hope other reviewers
won't accuse them as being Coldplay clones because Tourist are
more than just your average pop/rock band in the Coldplay vein,
their debut contains 41 minutes that will last for years."
Kaj Roth, MELODIC.NET
(Sweden), Oct 2006
"There's a song on this debut album from local rockers
Tourist called 'Do You Feel The Cold?' and it's one of the bands
oldest songs. The thing is, it still stands up and is testament
to these guys song writing powers. Produced by Welshman Greg
Haver (Manic Street Preachers) 'Minutes Last For Years' is rammed
with melodic yet gutsy classic rock that recalls everything
from noisy and squally indie rock like Swevedriver through to
the poignancy of Coldplay. Great songs, wickedly recorded -
both here and in Wales - and internationally viable."

“A powerful opening statement from this young Auckland
band. The album is full of straight ahead melodic rock with
anthemic qualities – in fact it has ‘stadium rock’
written all over it, albeit in a good way. Guitars are upfront
and loud while the rhythm section is punchy and aggressive.
Its a style that sees them standing with feet in both the indie
and mainstream rock camps. Rudd writes a good melody that soars
in modern rock way.”

"Hard working Auckland rock band Tourist have released
their debut album Minutes Last for Years. A highly polished
rock outing for a band destined for great things. Mature melodies
and harmonies meld together on these anthems creating a cerebral
experience as well as a toe tapping one! Recorded both here
in NZ and in Wales, Minutes Last for Years is a well sculpted
album. Well worth a peek."
NZ MUSIC, Oct 2006
"Produced in an effort spanning from Cardiff (Wales) to
Auckland’s York Street Studios, Tourist’s debut
album is a labour of love that is immediately evident from its
first lush chords. Embracing a sweeping and ethereal sound,
'Minutes Last For Years' does indeed have an international feel
that propels the band from its North Shore roots. The production
of the album is impressive on the Trident TSM40 mixing desk
and frontman Peter Rudd was nominated as a finalist in this
year’s International Songwriting Competition for the single
‘Do You Feel The Cold?’ from Tourist’s previous
EP. A sterling effort given the competition received over 15,000-odd
entries! The first single off the new album, 'Did You Kill Your
Love', is a toe-tapper from way back. Tight and slick with hints
of Coldplay.

"Tourist's first full-length album is solid, original,
fully rocking. Produced by Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers,
The Feelers, Pluto), these four young Aucklanders have only
been together since 2000, but sound like they've been playing
hard out for decades."

ZEALAND MAGAZINE, Nov 2006
"You may recognize the name from a few live bills and they
certainly have kept themselves busy over the last four years....it's
the second EP from Auckland quartet Tourist. Do You Feel the
Cold? is a strong, self-released cluster of tracks displaying
the musical abilities of the band and their natural ear for
melody and composition. The title track was produced by Welshman
Greg Haver, who's worked with some top-notch (welsh) artists:
Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia, Super Furry Animals, and
has already made an impression on the edgier end of commercial
radio, which is justified but by no means to be taken for granted.
The following four tracks don't let the side down either, the
gentle 'Island Song' and the pastoral rock of 'This Town', if
not standing out then at least helping to back-up the bands
sturdy statement."
REAL GROOVE MAGAZING
"When I first had a listen to Tourist I really enjoyed
the single ‘Do You Feel the Cold?’– it had
a great rhythm and was really tight. Tourist are a fresh New
Zealand band that I have confidence in getting very big because
they are so original– it’s not every day you hear
a rock band playing with an organ as they do on the track Island
Song. The great thing about Tourist is that they are very soft
and easy, the type of music you can listen to ANY where, any
time. The only down side that at times it does get a little
bit whingy and whiny, but like most great bands they get up
and over it quickly and start to focus on the rock n’
roll. Tourist play from the heart, with a passion. The best
tracks on this CD would have to be ‘Do You Feel the Cold?’
And ‘Free Your Mind,’ because they are the kind
of songs you and your mates can listen to and sing-a-long to
on rainy days. In the end it’s a great new Kiwi band that
I predict will go far."
RIP IT UP
“Tourist have received extensive
airplay with the Coldplayesque single Do You Feel the Cold on
the bNet and on Channel Z. They received a NZ On Air recording
grant, as well as a video grant for the song, and were one of
the first bands to take advantage of the Positively Wellington
Business scheme, receiving an additional $1500 for filming their
video in the capital city. They plan to take their music to
the masses over summer and with two EPs behind them (the first
'Beginning of the World' was released in 2002), and an album
planned for early next year, they have a lengthy set list. "We're
looking at playing at just about anything and everything we
can get," says Ranger. For now the goal is to get their
EP out there and "...sell as many as we possibly can."
Visit to purchase the EP - it comes highly recommended.”
